Analysis

Faded the Nats simply because of no CJ Abrams on Thursday, and they were blanked. Just nothing left in that lineup if he's not playing, and it doesn't sound a lot like that will happen here. Not sure it would even matter with Washington looking near quit mode and planning for a (mediocre) bullpen day. Wish it wasn't Marlins pitcher Ryan "Mucho" Gusto (0-3, 4.70 ERA), but having been off Thursday pretty much everything else is in Miami's favor.

Analysis

This is a rematch from Sunday, when Trevor Rogers and the Orioles defeated Freddy Peralta and the Rays. This game is part of one of the strongest MLB betting systems (Same pitching matchup in five days, with both starters getting a decision) I have tracked over the past 20+ years. Because the Rays rely heavily on analytics, they usually make the required adjustments. The Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox, Brewers, and Rays are the top five teams to bet on using this specific system. Both starting pitchers have an expected ERA around 4.00 this season. In his only career start at Camden Yards, Peralta allowed five hits and one ER across six innings, earning the victory. I think this line should be closer to pick em.

Of Troy Melton's 14 starts for Detroit, 11 have seen eight runs or less. On the other side, Noah Cameron has only surrendered five runs in his last 37.2 innings pitched. Based on how well both pitchers are throwing, I would be surprised to see any semblance of a high-scoring game on Friday night. Plus, 5 of the last 7 meetings this season have gone under this number.

Wisconsin transfer Billy Edwards Jr was named the starter Tuesday in Bobby Petrino's new UNC offense, and all I ask of the senior is that he works on not turning the ball over. It may sound like a simple task, but the QB position at North Carolina turned the ball over too much last season. If they actually score on offense, that will be a bonus, and Bill Belichick's defense will handle the rest. The defense isn't the problem; it should be the star of the team. They just need the offense to stay patient and, once in a while, make some noise with a couple of scores. I'm betting Belichick slows the game down in Ireland and stays close with the chance to win.

Analysis

San Jose State went 3-9 last year, with the worst performances in their last three games. Coach Ken Niumatalolo only had two starters return, and they're both offensive linemen. Now he's got to face a USC team in the opener that is loaded this season, with nine starters back on offense, including senior quarterback Jayden Maiava, and five on defense. They have all five starters on the offensive line returning, and that's the biggest component I look at in these opening games. The cohesion is gonna be there, and apparently the boosters money is also there, as they had the No. 1 recruiting class in college football. I think USC could be the next Indiana this year. USC shows off for the nation.
